Setting up the Info-Smith VPN
The VPN lets your computer reach Info-Smith's servers from anywhere. You need three things from Martin: your name and password for this site, and a separate set-up password. He gives them to you by phone or message; they are never on this site or in the download.
1. Fetch your set-up
- Go to vpn.infosmith.com.au and sign in.
- Choose Download your set-up. You get one zip file,
info-smith-vpn-<your name>.zip. - It downloads once only and is then removed from the site. If the download fails, or after 7 days, ask Martin for a new one.
2a. Windows 10 or 11 - Windows' own VPN, nothing to install
- Right-click the zip file, choose Extract All, then Extract. A folder opens.
- In the folder, right-click
Install.cmdand choose Run as administrator. Answer Yes when Windows asks (if it warns that the file came from the internet, choose Run). - When it asks, type the set-up password and press Enter (nothing shows as you type). It prints four numbered lines, then Done. Press a key to close the window.
- Delete the folder and the zip file: they hold your computer's private key.
- Connect: Settings, Network & internet, VPN, Info-Smith VPN, Connect.
2b. macOS 13 or later - a configuration profile
- Open the zip file (double-click). In the folder, double-click
Info-Smith-VPN.mobileconfig. macOS says the profile was downloaded. - Open System Settings, Privacy & Security, Profiles (on macOS 13: General, Device Management). Double-click Info-Smith VPN, then Install.
- When it asks for the certificate's password, type the set-up password. Type your Mac's own password when it asks for it.
- Delete the folder and the zip file.
- Connect: System Settings, VPN, switch Info-Smith VPN on.
3. Check it works
- Open a command window (Windows: PowerShell; Mac: Terminal) and type
ping 10.1.30.254. Replies mean you are in. - Only Info-Smith's own networks go through the VPN; the rest of your internet goes the usual way.
- Tell Martin it works. He can see your connection by your certificate's name.
If it does not connect
- Some hotel, office and mobile networks block VPNs (they use UDP ports 500 and 4500). Try another network, such as a phone's hotspot.
- A wrong set-up password stops the install: run it again and type it carefully.
- Cisco Secure Client works too, if you have a licence for it: install the set-up on Windows as above, then choose Info-Smith VPN in Secure Client's list.
- Anything else: tell Martin what you see, with a screenshot.
